Michel Toesca

Director

Michel Toesca is an independent filmmaker, who was born in Nice in 1960. He started his career in Paris. In 2008, he moved to Saorge with his family, in a mountainous region, near the sea and the Italian border. He continued his work there, still as passionate and enthusiastic as ever.

To the Four Winds is his fifth feature film.

THE SPIRIT OF THE LAW retraces five years of proceedings against the State, and reveals that the prosecutor's relentless pursuit of Cédric Herrou - who has done nothing but help his fellow man - masked the fact that the State was in the illegality. It was the government's failings that prompted him, the citizen, to make up for the state's shortcomings.
After taking his case to the French Constitutional Council, and even considering taking it to the European Court of Human Rights, the courts eventually ruled in his favor.
In a 1960s book entitled "L'État et le citoyen" (The State and the Citizen) published by the Club Jean Moulin, we can read: "If awareness of freedoms is reborn tomorrow, it will not be because of a law of nature, but because a certain number of men have wanted it. The reconstitution of democracy will not be a gift from heaven, but the product of a systematic effort of imagination, lucidity and honesty on the part of citizens".
The actions of Cedric and his lawyers in "The spirit of the law" concretely reflect this awareness of freedoms.

Cédric Herrou, a farmer in the Roya valley, has seen his daily life turned upside down by the arrival of refugees. He and other local residents decided to welcome and help the migrants who knocked on their door or crossed the valley. Filmmaker Michel Toesca has followed the journey of a citizen who, despite the legal risks involved, stands up and resists to ensure that human rights are respected, guided by the inventive and friendly spirit of the "Pantäi Niçois" and good farming sense.

Since then, he has changed his world, dispossessing himself of his land to turn it into common land and founding, with Marion Gachet, the Emmaüs Roya community (the first agricultural Emmaüs community in the world), which opens up the possibility of offering a living environment to precarious people in any situation, even "irregular" ones. ANOTHER WAY tells this story.
